I built this skating prop (a.k.a. Skater) for my three year old daughter primarily to save myself from having to hold her up and fully support her weight until she learned to ice skate. On our first visit to the rink with a Skater my daughter held onto it as I pushed her around, with the Skater supporting both of us. On our second visit to the rink with a Skater my daughter was completely independent on the ice.
She learned to skate very quickly without having to fear falling, being able to easily catch herself when she loses her footing. In short order my daughter has learned balance, steering, running with traction, and gliding on one or two feet. She has also learned good skating posture, not having to bend over a chair.
After several revisions I have found the perfect Skater design, with optimal base size and pitch to minimize tipping, while still keeping the Skater small enough to fit in the back seat of my car.
